Seals at Crimdon

Alert message sent 30/07/2021 14:52:00

Information sent on behalf of Durham Constabulary

As you may be aware, we have reports of an adult seal which has taken up residence in the Crimdon area. This female seal is well known to the BDMLR and they are monitoring her. This mammal is currently fit and healthy and there are no concerns about her wellbeing. It is unknown at this time how long she may remain in the area.

This is a request for members of the public not to approach this female seal or block her route to the sea. Also, please keep all dogs on a lead when on the beach as they may worry the animal.

Seals are wild animals and if provoked, can be aggressive. Although they may look cute and furry, they have a sharp set of teeth which can cause damage to person or animal alike. They can also spit at any approaching perceived threat, which again, is very unpleasant.
